A few weeks ago I planned a sushi dinner party for my family. I did some research to figure out what we would need and how exactly so set this all up. Since it was the holidays, we had a large group so we planned on making 14 rolls of all different kinds. We chose to make a few standard rolls and make the rest be a fun group activity so everyone could choose their own ingredients.
Tip #1: It is very important that you make sure the fish you buy is sushi grade. Most fish markets sell sushi grade fish and whole foods does as well. If you choose to use raw fish you can get very sick so you want to avoid that at all costs.
It's important to have a lot of table space since rolling and laying out the ingredients can take up so much room. We chose to have two stations of rolling and one station for cutting the rolls. Sushi rice is always my first step, depending on which rice you are cooking it usually takes around 20 minutes. I take this time to chop my vegetables and lay out all my ingredients.
Tip #2: Sushi rice can be made with a rice cooker or by steam cooking it with a lid on tight. You also will need sushi rice vinegar which makes the rice extra sticky.
I chose to use a bamboo rolling mat to make my sushi rolls but you can use a towel and saran wrap as well. I personally learned how to roll sushi through watching videos. It can be tough at first but the key to making the roll perfect is by rolling it very tight so it's not too large.
Tip #3: The best way to cut your sushi roll without breaking it or having it crumble is to wet to tip of your knife. If you allow the knife to do the cutting and use less force you will be much happier with your sushi pieces.

Our main types of sushi rolls we made were Spicy Tuna, California, Philly, and Veggie rolls.
Tip #4: There are tons of other fillings you can use for your rolls such as asparagus, bell peppers, mushrooms, shrimp, chicken, and tofu. We kept it simple but I recommend trying different kinds as well.
Tip #5: It is a great idea to label each roll incase anyone has allergies or preferences. We just wrote on little pieces of paper as we laid them out on trays and plates.
Tip #6: You can ask your guests to bring some fun sides too so that people who aren't into sushi can still snack on something. We chose edamame, peanut sauce rice noodles, a green bean tempura, and egg rolls.
My southern family usually has sit down dinners with maybe steaks and potatoes. But we chose to do something really fun and different and it was awesome. It was great to do something together and to try something new.
