For most of us thanksgiving is a very stressful holiday filled with questions we do not want to answer.
Are you dating anyone?
Do you have a job?
What colleges are you thinking about?
How is school?
What are you thinking about majoring in?
etc. etc. etc.
BLAH BLAH BLAH
It gets old pretty fast. But by asking these questions our families really just want to feel close to us. It may be your grandfather, aunt, or cousin that fires these questions at you on every family occasion. Although we will all have different answers, or maybe no answer at all it's so crucial to understand that by annoying you with these questions, they really do mean well. If your anything like me you know what It feels like to be the kid of the family, I have no cousins and no younger siblings so even though I may be turning 18 in a few months.. they still sometimes tell me to plug my ears during certain conversations. You can just imagine how well that goes over.
Thanksgiving is a special time to really spend quality time with your family, catch up on each others lives, and lots and lots of champagne. While it may be in your best interest to stay out of the kitchen to avoid the wrath of the ones cooking, it's okay to snack and socialize around the kitchen. If you are lucky enough to have thanksgiving hosted at your own house you can always go hide in your room if you get bored, I have perfected this trick.
Thanksgiving is a holiday to just step back and really appreciate the ones you care about. Tell the people you love how much they mean to you. One of my favorite parts about thanksgiving, (not the turkey) is waking up to a few texts from my close friends saying how much they appreciate me. I am thankful for my last year in high school, my amazing friends who I thank God for every day, and my family that has never left my side. This last week has been something I will never forget and I am forever grateful. I was accepted to my dream school and had the chance to see my brothers for the first time in a year.
Thanksgiving isn't all about the cooking and getting all dressed up, although the is my favorite part, It is about appreciating those around you. Don't forget to wish your friends and family a Happy Thanksgiving.. I can't believe Christmas is just a month away.
