This one time I almost got struck by lightning..
So as most of you know I have been going to summer camp since I was 9 and one summer my cabin and I went on PATH which is an over night camping trip. It is the best and worst night of most of our lives.. but we all love it anyway. So we hiked out to the PATH camp site just a few miles away from camp and we set up our tents. Our tents were huge so the cabin of 10 girls and 2 counselors fit well. We all settled in and started making a fire, two long hours later we finally made a fire to cook our stew on. Liz and I ran around the camp like complete fools. On the hike over their was water involved and canoes, and Liz and I ended up getting completely soaking wet so we decided to ditch our pants to let them dry. While Liz and I had lost our pants our counselor, Afton decided it would be funny to ambush us peeing outdoors and it went a little like this.
After this we resorted to wrapping a sheet around our bodies like a skirt so that was pretty entertaining.
As it got dark we all sat around the fire to do what we call a "vespers" or "gatherings." I don't actually remember what the gatherings was that night but it is pretty much a group talk where we ask a question or someone brings up a topic and everyone in the circle answers the question or gives their opinion. We use gatherings as a way to get to know each other and trust one another.
Towards the middle of the group gatherings with over 40 girls I could hear the thunder in the distance. We all ignored it at first but it got closer and closer and slowly began to poor down rain. We all ran to our tents even though they were already soaked too, we then decided to finish our gatherings in our tents. As we started talking the rain got worse and worse and the lightning started. The lightning was so close that my ears were ringing and we were miles from a safe cabin and trapped in the woods. For two hours the storm got worse and worse and thats when the lightning struck a tree three feet from our tent. At that moment the lightning was so bright that I could see the facial expressions on every single girl in that tents face. I heard screams from every tent on the camp site and I could feel the shock from my toes to my neck. The shock felt like needles going through every inch of my skin. Everyone around me was crying and Liz thought she had literally been struck by lightning, she was screaming and crying and it was scarier seeing her freak out than the actual lightning. A few hours later after the storm had passed we stepped out of the tents and saw the damage the lightning had cracked trees down and practically destroyed the campsite. We were so lucky to be safe and that the lightning didn't strike us. It's actually a funny story to tell now but at the time it was the scariest night of my life.
We walked back the next morning with a crazy story to tell and we sure didn't shut up about it. We talked about the lightning that "practically struck us" for at least a week. This amazing group of girls made this experience so much more fun and a great story to tell.
never forget.. the lightning path of 2014 :)
