It's 8:30 on a Saturday night.
Okay so lets just get this out there, I love my phone and it's practically attached to my hand. So before I go on another rant, let me make this clear that our cell phones can and WILL cloud our judgment. SO when your friends are blowing up your phone in a group message about what they are wearing out tonight. You are slightly annoyed, a little down, and feeling EXTREMELY left out..
THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL "FOMO"
"FOMO" actually means Fear Of Missing Out.. and I must admit I do. Urban Dictionary defines FOMO as "the fear that if you miss a party or event you will miss out on something great." Everyone has been there one way or another and feeling left out really sucks. So lets clear the air, I do indeed have fomo. I know.. how brave of me to admit?! The real question is "what is wrong with having fomo?" Other than my friends using it as an insult, I am proud to have friends great enough to actually have a fear of missing out on something they may be doing.
Within my last two years of high school I have become happier than I knew was even physically possible. I actually have amazing friends and just since August we have all become closer than I could ever hope we would have become. I like to look at FOMO as something cool.. going out of town, staying home, or not being invited somewhere IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. Do I miss my friends? sure. Do I wish I was there? maybe. Do I get a little jealous? of course.
But honestly I am only human and whether you would like to admit it or not, we all have a little FOMO every once and awhile.
Social media can make FOMO a lot harder because now we have Snapchat stories, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook is even making a comeback. There is nothing worse than laying in bed at night and seeing 100 seconds of weird fun at a party you did not attend. BUT the good news is that the FOMO will fade, the next party will be better, and the world will keep spinning.
So for now, enjoy your relaxing days and spend some time with those that matter the most to you.
